Because people hire the people they like best, the best people to cultivate are the ones who like you already.

Try this comfortable approach. Make a list of all the people who like you and have lunch with each one. Tell them what help you need to accomplish your goals, and ask what you can do to help them accomplish theirs. It doesn't matter where you are or they are in the pecking order. They know things and people you don't, and vice versa. It also doesn't matter when; if not this year, next year. Just stay in touch. And enjoy your lunch.
